ST. BENEDICT

Unique medal honoring St. Benedict.

Benedict was born in Nursia, Italy in 480.  He was born into Roman nobility and was the twin brother of St. Scholastica.  While studying in Rome he was disappointed by the corruption and temptations of the time.  He withdrew from society and became a hermit in a cave near Subiaco and remained there for three years in the care of a monk named Romanus.  He was known for his holiness, wisdom and miracles that spread far and wide.  While in the cave, he was asked to be an abbot in a nearby community of monks.  He accepted, but when the monks resisted his strict rule and tried to poison him, he left.  In 530 Benedict began a great monastery at Mont Cassino, the birthplace of Western monasticism, asceticism, community life, and common sense.  The spirit of St. Benedict's Rule is summed up in the motto of the Benedictine Confederation: pax ("peace") and the traditional ora et labor ("pray and work").

St Benedict is the patron against evil and the protector of Europe.  His feast day is celebrated on July 11.

As we advance in the religious life and faith, we shall run the way of God's commandments with expanded hearts and unspeakable sweetness of love; so that never departing from His guidance and persevering in the monastery in His doctrine till death, we may by patience share in the sufferings of Christ, and be found worthy to be coheirs with Him of His kingdom.

ST. ANTHONY

Doctor of the Church.  Wonder worker.  Patron of the poor and lost things.

O holy St. Anthony, gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for His creatures made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers.  Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety.  Encouraged by this thought, I implore of you to obtain for me (mention the request).  The answer to my prayer may require a miracle; even so, you are the Saint of Miracles.  O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the sweet Infant Jesus, Who loved to be folded in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours.  Amen.

St. Anthony, pray for us.

SACRED HEART OF JESUS

Oh most holy heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing, I adore you, I love you, and with lively sorrow for my sins I offer you this poor heart of mine.  Make me humble, patient, pure and wholly obedient to your will.  Grant, good Jesus, that I may live in you and for you.  Protect me in the midst of danger.  Comport me in my afflictions.  Give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, your blessing on all that I do, and the grace of a holy death. Amen.

ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER

Feast Day of St. Joseph the Worker
May 1

The Father created all and asked humanity to continue the work of creation.  We find our dignity in our work, in raising a family, in participating in the life of the Father's creation.  Joseph the Worker was able to help participate in the deepest mystery of creation.  Pius XII emphasized this when he said, "The spirit flows to you and to all men from the heart of the God-man, Savior of the world, but certainly, no worker was ever more completely and profoundly penetrated by it than the foster father of Jesus, who lived with Him in closest intimacy and community of family life and work.  Thus, if you wish to be close to Christ, we again today repeat, 'Go to Joseph'" (see Genesis 41:44).

ST. IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA

Unique vintage medal honoring St. Ignatius Loyola.

From a soldier of Spain to a soldier of Christ, Ignatius Loyola's life was transformed by God's love. After being wounded in battle, he spent a long time recuperating where he underwent a remarkable conversion. Inspired by reading books about Christ and saints' lives, Ignatius left his family castle and embarked on a pilgrimage to the Benedictine shrine of Our Lady of Monserrat. There he placed his sword on the altar of the Blessed Mother and dedicated himself to has as a knight. Living in a cave, his spiritual life and the work on his masterpiece, the Spiritual Exercises began. The Spiritual Exercises is a collection of his insights, prayers and suggestions on spirituality. His spirituality is expressed in the Jesuit motto, AMDG, ad majorem Dei gloriam - "for the greater glory of God." Ignatius founded the Society of Jesus or the Jesuits. Today, the Society of Jesus serves through Jesuit organizations around the world through education, social justice and spirituality. Experience the love of God as St. Ignatius Loyola did and make a difference in your life.

St. Ignatius Loyola is the patron of spiritual exercises. His feast day is July 31.

Teach us to be generous, good Lord; teach us to serve you as you deserve; to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to ask for any reward save that of knowing we do your will.

ST. JOSEPH

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the Throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires.  O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession and obtain for me from your Divine Son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ, Our Lord;  so that, having engaged here below your Heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of fathers.  O St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in the arms.  I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart.  Press Him in my name and kiss His fine Head for me, and ask Him to return the Kiss when I draw my dying breath.  St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls,
pray for us.
Amen.
